A glimpse at the role of faith in the lives of young adults (ages 18-30)

 

 









The Study

The Quantitative Approach to the Study

   Surveys were done with young adults (ages 18-30) in churches and collegiate ministries. This was done in church groups, college classrooms, and campus ministries. The colleges included Baptist universities and secular state universities. Persons who took the surveys included both students and non-students.

   A total of 1362 usable surveys were completed, covering all areas of young adult lifestyles:

  • Demographics
  • Family relationships
  • Family faith practices
  • Teenage church life
  • Youth-adult church relationships
  • Teenage spiritual life
  • Young adult spiritual life
  • Older adult friendships

The Qualitative Approach to the Study

   In-depth group interviews were conducted with both active and non-active young adults. Active participation was defined as attending church worship services or Bible study at least two or more times per month.

   A total of 24 interviews, each lasting approximately one hour, covered the following areas:

  • Lifestyle
  • Worries, concerns, priorities
  • Relationships with parents, friends, opposite sex
  • Role of faith in young adults
  • Reasons young adults are active or not active in church and religious activitie
