Relational
Factors during Young Adulthood and Young Adult Church Attendance
- Attendance
of friends: If their friends don't go to church, young adults don't
go to church.
- Spiritual
depth of friends: If young adult friends are shallow Christians,
young adults are less likely to attend church.
- Number
of older adult Christians: Those with two or less older adult friends
attend church less often.
- Spiritual
life of other adults: If older adult friends (teachers, coaches,
employers, neighbors, co-workers, etc.) are shallow Christians, young
adults are less likely to attend church.
Relational
Factors during Teenage Years and Young Adult Church Attendance
- Number
of adult Christian friends during teenage years: Those with two
or less older adult friends attend church less often in their young
adult years.
- Number
of volunteer youth leaders during the teenage years is associated with
attendance. Those who reported two or less volunteer leaders attend
church less often during their young adult years.
- Talking
about faith with Christian friends during teenage years: Those who
talked about their faith with Christian friends less than once a week
attend church less often during their young adult years.
Family
Factors and Young Adult Church Attendance
- Church
attendance of mother: Teenagers whose mothers attended church once
a month or less during their teenage years go to church less often during
their young adult years.
- Spiritual
life of mother: Teenagers who perceive their mothers to have deep
spiritual faith tend to go to church more as young adults.
- Church
attendance of father: Teenagers whose fathers attended church once
a month or less during their teenage years go to church less often during
their young adult years.
- Volunteer
Leadership by father: Teenagers whose fathers were involved in 3
or more volunteer leadership roles tended to go to church more during
their young adult years.
- Marital
status of parents: Teenagers whose birth parents are not married
go to church less than 2 times per month during their young adult years.
- Custodial
parent: Those who lived with a single parent during their teenage
years go to church two times a month or less as young adults.
- Step
siblings: Those who lived with step siblings during their teenage
years attended church less in their young adult years.
- Family
meal: Those who ate a meal with the family once a week or less during
their teenage years go to church less during their young adult years.
- Family
discussions about faith and the things of God: Those who reported
family religious discussions once a week or more during their teenage
years were significantly more likely to go to church as young adults.
Teenage
Religious Practices and Young Adult Church Attendance
- Church
attendance: Those who attended less than twice per month often attend
less than twice per month following high school graduation.
- Number
of church programs attended: Those who attended fewer programs during
the teen years attend fewer during their young adult years.
- Bible
or Christian club at school: Those who participated in a Christian
club during their teenage years attend church more during the young
adult years.
- Leading
church programs: Those who led church programs are more likely to
attend church as young adults.
- Prayer:
Those who prayed less than a few times a week tend to attend church
less during their young adult years.
- Reading
the Bible: Those who read their Bible daily during their teen years
attend church more during their young adult years.
Young
Adult Religious Practices and Young Adult Church Attendance
- Bible
study group: Participation in a bible study, prayer group, or worship
service, other than those at church (such as a campus ministry or para-church
group), during young adulthood is associated with higher church attendance.
- Number
of church programs: Those who attend more programs tend to attend
church more often.
