The Faith Journey of Young Adults

A glimpse at the role of faith in the lives of young adults (ages 18-30)

Qualitative Findings

In-depth group interviews lasting about one hour each, were conducted with both Active and Non-active young adults. The interviews were taped and thoroughly analyzed using qualitative research techniques.

The results of the analysis of these interviews are shown below. The reasons young adults attend church are illustrated in the graphic. Active young adults agree with Non-actives on the most important theme but differ on some others. The larger circles represent stronger themes.

Reasons given for church participation by Actives are:

  • Relationships
  • Deep personal faith
  • Meaningful church experiences and parent's influence (tie)

Reasons given for church participation by Non-actives are:

  • Relationships
  • Routine habit from younger years
  • Parents' influence

The reasons young adults do not attend church are illustrated in the graphic below. Active young adults agree with Non-actives on the least important theme but differ on some others. The larger circles represent stronger themes.

Reasons given for not attending church by Actives are:

  • Lack of commitment or weak faith
  • Away from parents
  • Lifestyle choices and friendships

Reasons given for not attending church by Non-actives are:

  • Church has lost appeal or value
  • Turned off by previous experiences
  • Lifestyle choices and friendships
